ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR UPSC - CIVIL SERVICE EXAM.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

                       Any aspiring candidate who had completed his bachelor's degree (or undergraduate) in any subject can apply to this civil service examination. This degree must be from a University incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of parliament or declared to be deemed as a university under section-3 of the university grant commission act, 1956 or possess an equivalent qualification.
                                        If you have completed only a diploma, you are not eligible to apply for this exam. Minimum you should complete a degree, If you have completed a master's degree, it won't go in vain because it will be very useful for your optional papers and make you easier in study purposes. But there will be no extra marks for any higher educational degrees. Even you have passed your degree with distinction or second class, all are the same under UPSC. People who have cleared their arrears with attempts or completed through distance education can also attend this exam.

NATIONALITY

                           The people who want to become an IAS or IAS, IFS (Indian foreign service) must be a citizen of India. This is applicable for only these services, but for other services, the relaxation applies to
  • A Citizen of India, or
  • A Subject of Nepal, Bhutan, or
  • A Tibetan refugee who permanently settled in India before 1st January 1962.
  • Apart from these relaxations, Those other than a citizen of India who possesses a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government can apply to these exams.

AGE LIMIT

Minimum age:
                      If you want to attend this exam, you should cross the age of 21 before the 1st of August at the year of examination. Even you had born on the 2nd of August, you are not eligible for that year's examination. With the required age, you can also write this exam by finishing the final year UG exam without having the degree certificate. However, this may apply to the preliminary examination, but before attending the Mains you should have the degree.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR UPSC - CIVIL SERVICE EXAM.


Maximum age & No. of attempts:
  • General category - The age limitation is up to 32 years with 6 attempts.        
  • For the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), the limitation is like the general category.
  • OBC - Up to 35 years with 9 attempts.      
  • For SC/ST, it is extended up to 37 with unlimited attempts.
  • Benchmark Disabilities have 9 attempts within 35 years of age.
For age proof, the commission accepts certificates like the D.O.B mentioned in the Matriculation or Secondary school leaving certificate, an extract from the register maintained by the universities, or an equivalent examination certificate.

If you had applied but did not attend the exam, that won't be counted as an attempt. But if you went to attend the exam and put the registration number on the paper, it will be considered as an attempt. So, Decide well and apply.
