UPSC Civil service examination pattern.


The UPSC Civil service examination has three stages. We have to clear all three stages without fail in a single attempt. The stages are

The Union Public Service Commission is a central body that conducts many exams for selecting people with good qualities for high positions. They always provide a yearly calendar, enabling people to know when they are going to conduct different exams, Also they give notifications before the date to apply for the particular exam. The Civil Service examination is one of them. Lakhs and lakhs of people write this exam, but only 400 to 500 people were selected. 
                                    The first preliminary exam is just a screening test that filters unwanted applicants. Only 10 t0 12 times of the required vacancies were selected to the mains after that few extra people were selected to interview. The marks obtained by the applicants in the Mains and Interview are summed up and they were arranged in decreasing order. According to the rankings obtained, they'll get postings across the country.

PRELIMINARY EXAM (Objective)

  • Paper-I  - General Studies-I   (100 Qs) 
  • Paper-II - General Studies-II CSAT (80 Qs)
Both exams were conducted on the same day for two hours. But, the first paper is considered for cut-off, the second paper (CSAT) is just a qualifying paper. If one hasn't secured the minimum mark of 33% in CSAT, even though he had the cut-off in the first paper, he will be disqualified.

MAINS EXAM (Descriptive)

  • Paper A - Compulsory Indian Language
  • Paper B - English
These two papers were qualifying papers that are conducted to check the language skills. We can choose any Indian-approved languages for paper A. Each paper contains 300 marks.
  • Paper I   - General Essay
  • Paper II  - General Studies Paper - I
  • Paper III - General Studies Paper - II
  • Paper IV - General Studies Paper - III
  • Paper V   - General Studies Paper - IV
  • Paper VI  - Optional Paper - I
  • Paper VII - Optional Paper - II
The total mark in mains was 1750, each containing 250 marks.

INTERVIEW (Viva)

  • Personality test 
This viva is conducted for 275 marks. The total maximum mark is 2075. For this, the mark obtained by the candidates were ranked. Depending upon the following requirements, the CADRE (State) were allotted for the passed applicants
